Important Facts about Kamakhya Temple
There is a lot of false information, rumors, and inaccurate stories circulating online about the Kamakhya Temple. Here are the correct details:
- The sacred site is referred to by various names such as Kamakhya, Kamakhya Temple Complex, Nilachal Hills, Kamakhya Hill, Kamakhya Dham, or Kamrup Kamakhya—all of which refer to the same location.
- No Tantrik, Aghori, or Sabara lives at Kamakhya or belongs to the Shebait families who serve the temple.
- Members of the Shebait families who are initiated into the Tantra Marga tradition of Kamakhya are known as Sadhakas, not “Tantrics”.
- Practices such as black magic, Sabari Vidya, or any harmful rituals are not performed by the Shebait Priests of Kamakhya.
- Kam Sindoor or Kamiya Sindoor is not made at Kamakhya and is not distributed as blessings to devotees.

- The water at the Peetha of Kamakhya Temple does not change color or turn red during the Ambubachi festival.
- During Ambubachi, the Peetha is not covered with a white cloth that turns red after three days. Instead, a small piece of red cloth, called Kamakhya Raktavastra or Kamakhya Angavastra, is given to devotees for free by the authorized Shebaits of Kamakhya.
- There is no practice of collecting sacred water from the Kamakhya Devi Peetha to give as a blessing.
- All Puja, rituals, and rites on Kamakhya Hill strictly follow the traditional procedures of the Tantra Marga Parampara of Kamakhya Kula, ensuring that devotees’ wishes are fulfilled.
- Only the initiated Shebait Priests of Kamakhya, who have hereditary rights, are permitted to perform the Puja and rituals at the temples. Outsiders are not allowed to conduct these ceremonies.
- Photography is strictly forbidden inside any of the temples on Kamakhya Hill, so any images of the Kamakhya Yoni Peetha or other Mahavidya Peethas found online are fake.
These are the facts, and we encourage everyone to respect the true traditions and practices of Kamakhya.
